The hemoglobinopathy counselor and educator training course is presented by the Global Sickle Cell Alliance Inc, USA (GLOSCA) and the Primary Health Care and Management Center, Ibadan, Nigeria (PriHEMAC) in partnership with the Comprehensive Newborn Screening and Follow up Program-Southwest, Ile Ife, Nigeria (CNBSPSW).
The curriculum for this training program is designed to prepare a cadre of single gene counselors and educators to provide individuals and families with accurate information on the occurrence or risk of occurrence of genetic disorders of the hemoglobin (sickle cell, thalassemia, and other hemoglobin variants) as well as resources and support for other services if needed.
The course is offered two to three times a year based on demand. The setting is hybrid (online lectures with weekly review by zoom plus internship for counselors). Training related costs include registration fees, counseling tools (blocks and manual), and data.
A minimum of two-year post-secondary education is required to participate, and it is not limited to those with health-related background (OND, RN, RM, NCE, other educational degrees).
